Estate Planning
Recent tax law changes have made it easier to keep
forestland in the family for income. Favorable capital gains tax
treatment and tax credits for forest management activities should
be a part of your financial planning. When ownership changes
hands, either through inheritance or a purchase, the timber value
should be separated from the value of the land and structures.
Much of your investment in this timber can be recaptured before
your start having to pay income taxes on timber sale income. You
need a qualified forester to establish this base value.
Land Purchasing and Sales Advice
When selling or purchasing a tract of land, buyers
or sellers often hire me to estimate the timber value to make sure
the price is beneficial to their side of the transaction.
Timber Cruising
I can be hired to estimate volume on large tracts
to supplement the work of permanent employees. I use a Husky
handheld computer for cruising, which streamlines the process and
provides very accurate data.
Herbicide Application
Using a backpack mist blower, I can economically
and effectively apply herbicide in areas where invasive fern
growth or other unwanted vegetation is present. This technique
allows me to be more selective when spraying and to treat small
areas that would not be feasible for skidder mounted mist blowers.
Stewardship Plans
To protect the biological wealth and
sustainability of our forests, the DCNR, through the federal Farm
Bill provides cost share assistance for qualified individuals to
write a forest management plan for your property. The plan
includes an assessment of your property with recommendations for
the improvement of timber growth and wildlife habitat. Once the
plan is in place, the landowner is qualified for assistance for
forest restoration projects. The Stewardship Plan does not
obligate the landowner in any way but provides professional advise
for the care of his forestland.
GIS Mapping
I use ArcView GIS and satellite imagery to map
properties and aid in type mapping and management planning. |
